Mr. Freedman was appointed directly from the Bar to the Court of Appeal for Manitoba where he sat from 2002 until his retirement from the bench in 2012. Both prior to his appointment and since 2012, he has been actively engaged in arbitration and mediation work.
Sole arbitrator, chair, or party nominee, in a broad range of commercial arbitrations including corporate and contractual disputes, contract interpretation, construction claims, shareholder disputes, partnership disputes and others. Representative arbitrations include proceedings under UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules involving multi-national corporate dispute and contract interpretation, damage and delay claims in complex construction projects, allocation of costs in major construction project, gas supply and pricing contract dispute, contractual disputes between governments and private parties, and shareholder/partner disputes.
Sole mediator in corporate and commercial disputes, including construction disputes, shareholder disputes, commercial litigation cases and others.
Former Canadian representative on panels for binational dispute settlement mechanism under Canada/US Free Trade Agreement and North American Free Trade Agreement. Member of panels in cases in Washington, D.C.
Background includes extensive legal experience over many years in corporate and commercial transactions representing private interests and public bodies in mergers, acquisitions, financings and a wide range of transactions, at the local, national and international levels.

Extensive experience in Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan as sole arbitrator and as chair of arbitration boards in labour relations

Arbitrations conducted and awards written on a wide range of issues, including discipline, lay-off, promotion/job selection, job classification, accommodation of disabled employees, workplace harassment, pension rights, disability insurance, health and safety matters and many others, including interest arbitrations in both the public and private sectors.
